BACKGROUND

English

The Episcopal Commission Justice and Peace (CEJP) was created on July 8, 1999 by the Conference of the Catholic Bishops of Burundi (CECAB). It is like its watchful eye about all the thorny problems that haunt the Burundian society, especially those relating to social justice, equity, human rights, the promotion of the common welfare, democratic coexistence, peacebuilding, reconciliation and development.

This Commission is to be conceived as a work of Church which thinks as a Church and for the Church. It is an instrument of the Church for the promotion of justice and peace according to the spirit of the Gospel and the Social Teaching of the Church on her values.

The Commission "Justice and Peace" is a body for study and reflection within the framework of the overall pastoral care defined by the Episcopal Conference and in relation with the Dicastery for the Department of Integral Human Development. As an Episcopal Commission, it is national and operates in a network. Its members come from all eight Catholic Dioceses of Burundi (8 Diocesan Commissions Justice and Peace namely: CDJP BUBANZA, CDJP BUJUMBURA, CDJP BURURI, CDJP GITEGA, CDJP MUYINGA, CDJP NGOZI, CDJP RUTANA, CDJP RUYIGI. This network includes priests, religious and laity.

The structure of the CEJP belongs to that of the Catholic Church. Thus, we find Justice and Peace Commissions at the level of each diocese, each parish and even at the level of branches and Basic Ecclesial Communities (structure in the area of the hills). Based on this structure, the CEJP is in a good position to exert influence at the national level and at all levels of society by acting as a catalyst in the promotion of peace, justice, reconciliation, source of integral development.
